Yes, but it is a big lens,new camera, and you are getting used to it all, so I personally think these are a massive improvement on your first ones with the new lens Is it very heavy?

Great job. Your compositions are very good, each picture is more than just a heron shot - there is interest or action in each picture.

re: Sharpening - Youre using a tripod now? cable release? mirror up? manual focus?

i don't know how much it weighs all told actually... it is very heavy - and makes my arms shake a lot - and hurts like a *bleep* lol - however, i do get used to it - and it's good excercise!

tripod and auto focus (though I was trying with manual a bit, none of the shots were that good - in focus, but not good anyway :/ I am used to using manual focus on my old SLR - but this is a little different - seems more sensitive somehow!). I will be trying cable release - or remote... but have yet to get the equipment

feel silly now, but i was afraid to ask before *blush* what is mirror up and how would I do that? and what does it do?

in your settings you have the option of 'mirror lock up'. Essentially what this does is sets the camera with the mirror in the up position before you take the photo. This means that when you press the shutter release, you will not experience what is known as 'shutter slap' caused by the mirror going up and then coming back down when you depress the shutter release. on long lenses it can make all the difference as it reduces any vibration within the camera to an absolute minimum.
