Swallows in flight - first attempt

Go easy on me as this is my first attempt at trying (and I mean trying) to photograph these guys on the wing. I can only liken it to clay pigeon shooting using supersonic 5 pence pieces and an air rifle.

Anyway - after a dozen or so frames containing either a splodge or thin air I seemed to get a method going that gave me at least something in the way of focus.

The light was fading fast and with a maximum aperture of 5.6 @ 400mm and ISO cranked up - I'm quite happy for a first go although I think I can do better now.

Any tips or pointers welcome.

Re: Swallows in flight - first attempt

Cheers Azz

It's a world away from photographing birds of prey in flight or garden birds on a twig. They're like bullets and their high speed unpredictable acrobatics make for some fairly energetic panning moves - I nearly put my back out twice.

Re: Swallows in flight - first attempt

WOW what a tough subject to attempt to photograph and how well you succeeded.
Of course the real test is to photograph the insects they are catching on the wing.

Thanks Bazza - I did have some where the midgies and flies were visible but unfortunately not the bird
