D40x not focusing - Help!

I cant find a section for 'problems', so I am sticking my problem here!

I have a Nikon D40x, (which I bought at the end of last summer) and while the kit lens is fine the 55-200 (AF-S), for this model seems to have thrown a wobbly!

It doesnt seem to want to focus on anything, and even if it deigns to do so, as soon as I press the shutter button, it whirrs out of focus again! The action is very sluggish, and not as smooth as it has been, although it is def in auto mode.
Any ideas? Might one of m'boys been fiddling with a setting that I have missed?
Are lens covered by a warranty? I spent a LOT of money putting myself together a package via Jessops, and the lens was not cheap

back to jessops you should go.find out whats wrong and if warrenty covers it,

Whats it doing Debs? Is it constantly refocusing? Its poss that you have changed the setting to continual focus - not sure how you change it on the D40 though

Have a look at page 75 in the manual.

Focus mode

Or go to the menu
> Custom setting menu
> Focus mode
> AF-A (auto-servo AF is what mines on)

Azz can i ask you what your AF area mode is set to? I will be scouring the manual asap, but atm, I am trying to adjust to wearing new specs (my own lenses are also constantly refocusing )

kanikula, yes it is coninuously refocusing.

I think I will have to take a trip to jessops, with the years warranty is carries.

There may even be a 'reset to default' settings somewhere. Try that first - might save you a trip

I had already done that, so it was off to my nearest Jessops.
The chap tried it on one of their own camera bodies, and agreed that it was indeed very poorly, so its gone off to Nikon for assessment....and it could be a month before I hear anything.

I am lost without my camera
