Do you think we need a limit on the size of photos posted?

Hey Guys,

Someone has contacted me recently wondering if it might be worth setting a limit to photos posted - to be no wider than 1024 px (ish) wide - as some of the larger photos are taking their connection ages to load. What do you all think?

Here's an example of a thread with BIG photos:
http://www.yophotographer.com/page.php?t=11752

And here's an example of ones within this suggested guideline:
http://www.yophotographer.com/page.php?t=13374

At first I thought sometimes it's great to see all that detail - but looking at Ken's adjusted size I don't think anything's lost actually.

What does everyone else think?

Re: Do you think we need a limit on the size of photos posted?

I do try to keep my photos to 1000 pixels on their longest side. If anyone has a larger photo maybe they'd be better posting a link?

Re: Do you think we need a limit on the size of photos posted?

I tend not to post anything bigger than 800px wide, to fall in line with other websites/forums and blogging, I resize everything for the web to 800 px. I think 1024 max size is fine, and a good idea

Re: Do you think we need a limit on the size of photos posted?

I tend to post the ready made 'medium' options that flickr creates or 1024 max.

Waiting for HUGE images to load only to have them display at forum size anyway can be a bit tedious.

As you say Azz, it's great to see all that detail and I, for one, would not like to lose that option. I suspect that the majority of the members don't have this problem so why tinker with the system. IMO, Using a link for VERY LARGE images would be a better idea.

I agree, can take a while to load, and then snap back into forum resized images anyway, and it probably affects the quality when the forum resizes them for you too.

Btw, if you want the ideal size for YoP before the system 'minimizes' the image for you - it's 675px

Re: Do you think we need a limit on the size of photos posted?

Coming from the slide film days I tend to post fairly large images from time to time because I like to show the detail, just as I would have seen it if I were projecting a slide. But I am aware that this can be counter productive at times and may turn away people who would otherwise give a cursory look to a post topic that otherwise would not interest them.

I wonder if either a 1024 limit should be imposed (although I personally don't favour this) or simple warning in the post title (contains large images) so forum users can decide whether they open a particular post.

I'm not sure what would be the best route, but I guess a limit has to be set so that all users get a reasonable responsive forum experience.

Re: Do you think we need a limit on the size of photos posted?

I host my images on Smugmug at 1200x1200. The beauty of Smugmug is that I can then post any size I want into threads up to the max of, in my case, 1200x1200.

On here I post at 1000x1000 whilst on some other non photography sites, I can post at 800x800 and one site the max is 485x485. One can size the image to whatever one wishes and there are no fixed sizes.

I think 1024x1024 would be ample.

Re: Do you think we need a limit on the size of photos posted?

Both links to Kens pics I have no problem. Very fast. I can see the problem for some though.
I post medium from flickr (I don't now the size).
As I don't have a problem viewing I will go with the flow.
