Bridge camera for my mum ;D

Righty then, want to pick your brains. I've never owned a bridge camera so know little about them, however my mother is interested in joining our camera club and having a go at photography. She absolutely needs live view, as her eyesight isn't good, and she finds it hard to use a viewfinder. She needs a largish, bright LCD screen, and this camera needs to be fairly cheap . She wanted to be part of the camera club, enter the grade 3 competitions, but not have to worry about buying a more expensive camera - well that's fair enough - but I know her budget is very very small. For now, she's borrowing on long term, my old Pentax P&S - but I'd like to propel her towards something better. I'm hoping she gets 'the bug' and ends up with a good DSLR - but if not, at least she'll need a camera that is suitable for her needs.

Anyway - waffling too much - any thoughts appreciated

(oooh - and to enter the Grade 3 competitions, she only needs to enter 6x4 images, so it needs to be able to cope with at least that!)

Re: Bridge camera for my mum ;D

Thanks for that, that looks nice, I like the LCD Will see what others have to say as well though. I was hoping for more of a bridge camera, but the LCD on that is ideal.

Re: Bridge camera for my mum ;D

Laura, I have a Panasonic FZ50, well, Lee has it now since I got my Oly, but it does take great pics. It can be used as a P&S, or you can go into the menu and really have a good play with it

Re: Bridge camera for my mum ;D

Hi Laura!

I used to have the Panasonic FZ18 and it is an excellent camera for p&s, also it has a wicked wide angel/Macro and zoom lens combined to boot, also manual settings if wanted! It really is a good little camera for a beginner.

Re: Bridge camera for my mum ;D

If it's a 'bridge' camera you're after rather than a compact then the Fujifilm Finepix cameras seem to get great reviews.

Re: Bridge camera for my mum ;D

Thanks all - I'm not sure of the exact budget, but basically as little as possible, that's still good. That said, I don't think I'll have too much of a hard time convincing her that a DSLR may be better

(for the record, she's figpig on here ;D)
