uploading RAW files

I'm new to shooting in RAW - and have a fab picture I want to hav c&c'd - but I can't figure how to upload the RAW file anywhere. Also, it's a NEF file - and no program I use will allow it - except capture nx - and I only have a trial version, and don't really want to buy it. Of course, when I convert the file to jpg the quality is lost.

any help appreciated

Re: uploading RAW files

You shouldn't lose too much quality when saving as jpeg - up the quality setting and see if that helps.

Picture hosts won't allow you to upload a NEF file as it is a proprietary format i.e not a standard image format. So not everyone will be able to view it.

Re: uploading RAW files

I will try converting to jpg and see what happens!

Re: uploading RAW files

if you save and upload as a jpeg we will still be able to view it in as high a quality as is possible to be viewed on a pc. Typically screens/monitors are 0.28 dot pitch which will only display images at 72 dpi irrespective of how many ppi you saved the original file in.

regardless of software - how do I convert NEF files to RAW or Tiff? :S so I can make them work in something other than nx?

Re: uploading RAW files

Open them in what ever software you use, when you have adjusted as required save as either tiff or jpeg, if I want to put them on the web I usually save for web, most software has this feature and it will safe the image as a small (pixel) jpeg. You can save as a large file but then it can take ages to load or the intermediary program you use (like photobucket) will reduce it anyway.
