Sigma 50-500 and converter help

sorry- meant to say this is crossposted from another forum too!

Ooookay... I'm going to annoy everyone a little further with questions! As I've said in a previous thread, I have a Nikon D80 - and currently the kit lens and a tamron 55-200mm (i think :o) but I want to extend my reach and was thinking about digiscoping. Having looked closely at all the options, I now feel buying the Sigma 50-500 would be a better option for me,so that's what I plan to do. In the mean time though, I'd like a converter for my other lenses, and actually, it may be useful on the sigma too. I also do plan to get a macro lens at a later date, and would like to perhaps use the converter with that too. Obviously, it's not a huge deal if i can't/don't use the converter with those, but I'd like some advice on which converters are likely to work with all/any of those, and what I need to look for in a converter.

Also, is the 50-500 a good lens to go for? I've done some reading on here, and it seems to be the lens of choice for bird photography. I must admit it's been driving me wild lately as I've just moved to Ireland, and I live near esturies with some amazing waders and seabirds, but I can't get close enough!

Any help appreciated!

xx

Re: Sigma 50-500 and converter help

Can't say about the 50-500mm lens, I have the earlier 150-500mm one. Yes it gives far greater reach, but the longer the mm length the more magnified the camera shake. I wouldn't recommend using one without a good tripod.

Re: Sigma 50-500 and converter help

Not intending to be critical here but do you know how many people on this forum are likely to own a 500mm lens? You might want to also try posting your question on a specialty forum such as www.nikoncafe.com since they have a huge pro following. They are likely to have a number of folks that actually own & use such a lens.

Re: Sigma 50-500 and converter help

It's ok - I was only asking on the offchance... I have actually posted on a forum that has a lot of users who own these lenses (a wildlife dedicated one).

Sorry if this thread has caused offence?

Re: Sigma 50-500 and converter help

I certainly didn't take offence I was just suggesting you'd have better luck getting a serious answer to your question on a much larger forum. A 50-500 is a very specialized lens.

Re: Sigma 50-500 and converter help

She posted here cos she was interested in our thoughts on the topic

I agree with Bazza about the tripod, also, I think Sgt Major has this lens so it may be worth going through his threads to see his pics taken with it, maybe if something specific crops up in one of his pics ask in his thread as he should get a notification email when there's a reply
