Basic kit list.To go with first DSLR.

There seems to be quite a few of us on here who are just starting out with DSLR cameras .

If you were putting together a kit list for a beginner what would you list, in what order and why.

There is a minefield of info out there , I thought this might help us.
Kit 1
Canon Eos 400D
My Compact/P&S: Canon Ixus 75

Re: Basic kit list.To go with first DSLR.

All I got at the mo is the body and kit lens - but I wanted to be able to take quality pics without having to buy a better lens, so went with a DSLR that has a good (ok excellent) reputation kit lens with it

I use my laptop bag as the camer bag

Next on list is a telephoto lens and bigger flash
Kit 1
Nikon D300
Nikon 55-200mm VR
Kit 2
Nikon D40
Nikon 18-55mm
My Compact/P&S: Panasonic Lumix TZ7

May sound cheeky from a new person to the forum but one thing you ALL forgot, MEMORY CARD!!! lol, nae point having all the equipment if you have nothing to save it too :P

Fudge, i usualy have one on my len's just cause if a stone flicks up and smacks the filter, it wont cost anywhere near as much to fix/replace as if it bounced of the lens.
Kit 1
Canon 30D
Canon Efs Macro 60mm f2.8 (1:1)
Canon Efs 17- 85mm usm Is f4-5.6
Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 telemacro (1:2)

Spot on... Same here... UV filters have very little visible effect on the majority of your photographic work, however most lenses are pretty expensive - and if you damage/scratch the front element in any way - it'll be a costly replacement.

A good UV filter (depending on size) will cost you around ten to twenty pounds....

If you come racing around a corner with your camera around your neck, and it bangs head on into a door handle, the worst that'll happen is that you'll damage your UV filter, and need to replace it... Much much cheaper!! (And it keeps dust off the main element - so that as you clean the UV filter, again if you manage to scratch it - it'll just be a few pounds to change it!)

Every lens should have a UV filter as standard

Re: Basic kit list.To go with first DSLR.

My recommendations for a basic kit are:

DSLR Body
Decent walkaround lens (my preference is to buy the body only and purchase a decent lens separately, however if finances don't allow then the kit lens would suffice).
Spare battery
2 memory cards
UV filter
Camera bag

IMO a tripod/monopod aren't necessary for people just starting out - I had my camera for over a year before I bothered buying a monopod and still don't use it all that often, I prefer to hand hold where possible
Kit 1
Canon 20D
Canon 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM
Canon 70-300 4-5.6 IS USM
Canon 100 2.8 USM Macro
Canon 10-22mm 3.5-4.5
Canon 50mm 1.4
Canon 85mm 1.8
