I mentioned this to Jols a day or two back, 8 bit colour...
would be interested to hear if that is the reason?

When you save an image as a JPEG, you're saving it as an 8-bit image, which gives you 256 shades each of red, green, and blue, for a total of 16.8 million possible colours. As a rule all Jpegs are 8 bit.
Adobe, in CS5, have finally managed to automatically down scale a 16 bit or 32 bit image to 8 bit when one selects save as a jpeg. In all other versions of PS the conversion to 8 bit has to be done manually before saving.
