Re: Reen Harbour

Mmm - it is a bit, that's why I put it in general photos I just loved the lighting. Would have been much nicer if all the grasses and other plants hadn't been so noticable/tall - just the boat, the nets and the castle.

Re: Reen Harbour

What a fantastic photo opportunity - I can tell youre bent isnt landscapes.

I don't mean that critically - it's just that I can see loads of potential in the scene in front of you. I don't think you've exploited that.

I'd like to have seen you use your 18-135 at the low end, get down lower, filling the frame, closer up, concentrating on foreground - mid ground and distance, lead in lines, ROT's, golden section, to name but a few.

One of the reasons this image looks busy is that there are three principle elements all competing for the viewer's eye. Nothing wrong with that so long as they complement each other or naturally lead into each other.

All that said - dont let rules of composition dictate....so don't be afraid of breaking rules!

As Edward Weston said, "Consulting the rules of composition before taking a photograph is like consulting the laws of gravity before going for a walk."

I'd be inclined to revisit the place and look at all of the potential images just waiting to be snapped up.

Re: Reen Harbour

Thanks JR - very helpful indeed! I really *don't* do landscapes, so you're spot on there - I'd like to try more though. I should have changed lenses, 50mm wasn't wide enough - and I should have got down lower (again, a near impossibility with the set up I was sporting). I will try to get out there again - figpig actually got much better images than me!

Re: Reen Harbour

My eyes wander around this photo looking for a central subject & I can't find one. Everything's in focus so you could have used a disposable camera to take it. Had you changed your shooting position more to the right(if possible), used the boat as your main subject and blurred the castle slightly in the background it would have worked better. Practice depth of field contol in your landscapes.
