Love the Gull.

I had my first attempt at birds in flight today at Anstruther. I've had a quick look and they're not a patch on that.

Got to keep on trying though !

Can I ask what settings you use - AI Servo ? & also how wide an aperture ?. If I shoot wide open I can obviously user faster shutter speeds but then I've less margin for error on the focus.

Thanks Phil.

For the gull images I used shutter priority, (I always try keep this over 1/800 for anything in motion as I don't have IS and always shoot hand held)
A1 servo, and either centre focus point or all focus points active. ThE aperture is usually f5.6 depending on shutter speed, available light and auto ISO. For portrait type bird shots I change the focus to A1 focus which allows me to re-compose the shot when focus is locked on the bird.

Hi Grant, all great photos, particularly like the Goldfinch, sharpness and colours excellent.

Do you set up your own hide and position a branch for the birds to land on. lso be interested in the lens(s) you use.

Thanks.

No, I use the RSPB's hide in Lochwinnoch. They have 3 bird hides and a blind, two of the biggest hides are situated on the edge of the loch and the one I use is a dedicated photography hide ( no camera no entry) I also use the blind along one of the trails quite often as there are more bird species there.

I use a Canon 400mm f5.6 L lens ,Canon 50d and a Canon 5dMKII (I mostly use my 50d)

Also, since I'm a member I get to use all the hides and trails for free I think that applies to all RSPB nature reserves in the UK

Fantastic as always! I would love to visit there - maybe one day - it's a bit far for a day trip!

I set up my own hides and feeders (as there's none around here at all, anywhere!) but mostly shoot without hide.
