Argh! I can't stand it anymore!!!

Will they or won't they??

My wife is using my 6 year old 300D which I gave her along with a few old lenses. I want to buy her a new camera for Xmas, especially after buying the 550D and loving the new interface.

So I want to buy her the 1000D, well that's not strictly true, I want to buy what must surely by now be the overdue replacement for the 1000D. So do I buy the 1000D before Xmas, so she has a present, or wait for the replacement that may never come

I did consider the 500D, but to be honest, it's a bit too pricey for a camera that has been replaced already, even though Canon won't admit it has been 'replaced' (they consider the 550D a 'sister' model, yeah right)

So, buy or wait

Alan.

Re: Argh! I can't stand it anymore!!!

I would consider buying closer to Xmas - if you've not heard anything by then go for it. Even if it is replaced soon after, I wouldn't think your wife would mind... being so happy with the 300D

Are there likely to be any announcements closer to Christmas. I would wait until at least December before making any decisions.

If you and your wife are happy with the spec of the 1000D then I don't see much point in spending extra cash on the 2000D when it arrives but I'd wait till nearer Christmas when the prices fall.

Re: Argh! I can't stand it anymore!!!

Many of these 'improvements' aren't that significant to most of the photos we take. However I can't see any reason to buy now if it is an xmas present. I have noticed a pattern in camera prices...it seems early xmas present buyers during November seem to get offered bundles and better prices before they go up again for December. The prices then drop again for January sales, often to no better a price than the November prices unless you get the last one managers bargain. Stocks also run low in december/jan. See if i am not wrong! So, therefore i would assess the market from November! Can't iamgine Canon would do anything new Dec or Jan.

Thanks all,

I guess my wife is happy with th 300D, but it has a few shortfalls, the main two are a very small LCD screen, and really slow write speeds, take 3 or 4 images and you have to wait a fair while before you can shoot again.

What does bother me is that I don't want to buy something that will be replaced, perhaps in a matter of weeks, I am sure you know what I mean. While she may or may not use it, it would be nice if the new model did some video too, even if it is just 720p. I didn't think I would use video on my cameras, but both the 5DMk2 and the 550D have had a fair bit of video use, especially fhe 550D as it is really light (when using the kit lens) and easy to move about.

Ah well

For now I will wait, as BC says, prices will perhaps dip a bit, especially after Xmas, it wouldn't be the first time I have bought my wifes Xmas pressie in the Jan sales lol

Re: Argh! I can't stand it anymore!!!

I think there's been some good advice given - I would wait personally, at least until nearer Xmas and see what you can get, or give her a card with something inside telling her your plan, at Xmas, and see what January brings?

Yes, a card sounds a good plan, a little not inside that says 'I Owe you 1 Camera'
