Grasshopper

Have no idea how a cricket managed to get up three floors, but heard a noise and wondered what the hell it was! Found him sitting on the window sill - funny thing is playing a video made him cricket, turning it off made him stop! Think he's a baby.

Which version do you prefer?

Re: Grasshopper

Can they fly? Do you know I have no idea, locusts can and they are related.

Beautifully captured but I have a composition problem would prefer it to be about to jump into the picture and not out of it.

Re: Grasshopper

I remember being told it's the wings that male crickets use to make a noise so there you go - it's a boy & I guess it must be able to fly.

Agreed it would have been nice to see him facing us and that shadow is in an unfortunate place but you've done well as I suspect it was a case of getting whatever you could.

Re: Grasshopper

Had to look it up and they do fly, they are, should you care, Pterygota or the division Exopterygots, that is, externally developed wings. The Grasshoppers, Crickets and Cockroaches are Orthoptera apparently.

This one is the Great Green and I think rather hansom, you are right Phil the sound is produced by rubbing the back, jumping legs against the hard wing cases.

Think it is one of the functions of a image to make one think and wish to learn so your shot has fulfilled that criteria for me Azz even if I would have liked him turned around but then we may not have been able to admire him and those magnificent legs.

Prefer the second as it shows a bit more detail.

Re: Grasshopper

They make the noise by rubbing their back legs/wings together. As for flying they can to a certain extent but not over a long distance. As a lad in Cornwall we used to catch them and have flying races to see whose went the furthest.

Re: Grasshopper

Thanks for the info guys and glad you like it

I wish he was facing my way too, but it was on the landing window which doesn't open fully so I couldn't even get the camera out to get a different position/viewpoint. I did try to get closer and closer - did it slowly not to spook him and that was the last shot before he jumped off
