Chip on lens - best way to fix?

i have a small chip which has appeared on the lens of my camera and i was wondering if anyone can tell me what is the best remedy for this as i dont really want to have to go to Jessops and pay hundreds to get it sorted if i can avoid doing so. As i say it is quite small but it does appear on my pictures as a small blur in the top right hand corner. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Can you say which camera and model if a compact -bridge -SLR-DSLR. Giving advice really all depends on the value of the camera in the first place.

I've always been under the impression it is only worth doing on very expensive lens as it can be quite costly. Which lens is it?

it is a Fuji finepix S100. Fixed lens.

so thats a camera with a new market value of around £300/£350 if I am not mistaken, and first came out on 24 jan 2008

Repairing would mean fitting a replacement lens and labour/post and packaging costs .

I would suggest sending it away for an estimate to the cost of repair,I have a sneaking feeling that this would work out at quite a chunk of the total cost you paid for the camera. Then weigh up if the repair is worth it.
The camera may well be worth repairing but also think of how much use it has had, and what the estimated life span is ( this is the number of times the shutter has been actuated). Bit like a car the more miles on the clock the more risk of things going wrong in the future.


Presumably the camera isn't insured but may well come under a household policy which would be worth looking into.

In the photographic world new models are comming on stream nearly ever day in one form or another, with higher specs at a lower price. Bearing that in mind after getting a repair quote you would have to balance that quote against getting a later model for a few pounds more.

Finally there are companies the specialise in camera repairs which you can find on the internet via google, Jessops will only add on handling fees to do what you can do direct with a repair company. Even a phone call to such a company saying what the fault is may result in getting a rough estimate as to cost of getting a replacement lens. Fuji have their own repairers if you can't find one.

Thanks for that Bazza. Ive been having a play around with it this morning and it doesnt appear to be leaving visible marks on the pictures (so why it did with the one i took yesterday i have no idea!). So for the time being i think i will keep using it and see what the results are. Thankyou once again for the gen.

It could be to do with the way the light is hitting the lens which shows the scratch up in the picture.
Try using a lens hood if you are still having a problem maybe a that will help. If one isn't made for your camera it isn't too hard to find something that does the same thing held on with an elastic band.
