Re: Three Golds and a Green, no, not snooker

They help if you are enlarging or if you have had to use a high ISO because in general they are better than the camera can do. With cameras you seem to get low noise, poor detail or high noise, good detail and it seems very difficult even with high end cameras to get high ISO, low noise, and good detail.

Re: Three Golds and a Green, no, not snooker

TBH a bit of noise doesn't bother me too much, sometimes I think it can add something to the shot beginning to think I look at photography, in a weird way

Re: Three Golds and a Green, no, not snooker

No, given a choice I would go with the noise and keep the clarity as I took it, sometimes noise adds atmosphere and the only time it worries me is on a plain background.

I think the Autosharpen probably caused the halo or edge distortion. Of course I had no idea you'd already greatly enlarged the photo from I assume a cropping.

Re: Three Golds and a Green, no, not snooker

It's one reason I purchased Genuine fractals. It allows 1000% increase without loss of detail. That lets me crop a great deal and still have a decent photo. I don't use it much mind you but it's one of a kind software when you really need it. My longest lens is 200mm so I can use the software to cheat a bit.

Re: Three Golds and a Green, no, not snooker

It doesn't matter what super-dooper software you run your image through... it it's a poor image in the first place you wont be able to improve on it - all you will be doing is making a half-way house image, which imo, look equally as bad. Even images at actual size may look sharp and noise free in the first instance but as soon as you enlarge them, that noise and lack of sharpness will increase exponentially.

It's worth getting into the habit of checking sharpness, stability, etc in camera before processing.

Re: Three Golds and a Green, no, not snooker

This is not supposed to be anything other than a snap, I was not asking for help with it, just a snap shot that I mentioned could have been improved by running it through some noise reducing software.

Undoubtedly what you are saying is true but this is the happy snappy section and was uploaded to share with those who like birds and bird feeders. This was by no means a carefully prepared shot and was taken whilst sitting at my desk updating a spreadsheet, not ideal for checking sharpness, stability, etc in camera .
