D40, Opinions

Just a quick question, Like many of you know I am looking to get a DSLR in a couple of months, however I do have the chance to get the d40 this weekend. So my question is what is everyone opinion of this for a beginer and someone while not being an overly serious photographer I do enjoy taking photos

Re: D40, Opinions

I think it would be spot on for you...
Maybe save up a bit more and get the d40x?

Re: D40, Opinions

The price is the bit what is drawing me in, with some vouchers I got I would be getting it for £265

What about a second hand D50 and spend the spare on an extra lens

You have the AF in the camera then not the lens

Re: D40, Opinions

I am being a bit snobby and after new. It was one of the 2 I was looking at and the price is giving me that nudge. Though like whenever I buy anything I have 2nd thoughts, and 3rd, 4th....

Re: D40, Opinions

That's about what I paid for mine I think and I really am over the moon with it. If you look at my pics, you'll see that there really is no need for a 10MP camera (unless you are into serious print work - ie printing big pictures).

The lens you get is excellent too - so any future lens upgrades will really be additional instead of a replacement.

The D60 comes out soon tho, although it will be more expensive.

D40 get's a huge thumbs up from me nothing touches it in that price range imo.

Re: D40, Opinions

Cheers, Azz. It would be £280 without the vouchers which I still think is a good price. The largest I print size I do is only 10x8 off a 7mp p&s and they look fine so I dont think that will be a problem. So your advice would be to go for it?

Re: D40, Opinions

Yeah - if you want a DSLR and that's your budget, then I don't think you will find better.

Plus any lens you buy for it in future can be used with more professional cameras like the D80 and D200 should you get one in future.

That's my plan. Get the D40, get more lens, get more lens, get a higher spec'd camera like the D80 or D200 (<< if I can save up enough that is!).

Re: D40, Opinions

Here are some of the pics I've taken with it. They only get slight photoshop treatment as I just don't have time to spend ages with them.

I usually crop to 690px
Slightly adjust levels
Ad a tiny bit of sharpening (less than 20) to compensate for reduction in size.
