Public Art...discuss!

Is the Public Art...sculptures etc. any good in your area...or is it a leftover from the abstract sixties or limited to the well favoured carved eagle/badger/wolf statues in woodland areas.?

Does it matter to you?

I know we can't all have Anthony Gormley nudes but I genuinely despair about the quality of Public Art.

It could make such a contribution to the environment and to photography thereby. but so often it looks like this. ( taken yesterday)

Re: Public Art...discuss!

This type of "Art" is not for me, I generally refer to it as "Arty Farty". Think its correct description is Avant Garde. Could do with a tad more space at the bottom, otherwise nicely captured.

Re: Public Art...discuss!

I wasn't trying to display it in a good light Norman.

It makes me angry and sad that there is so little regard given to the people when the stick up pieces like this and leave them there for decades.

Public art 'should' rouse something in the observer..at least make them think or even laugh.

and there is such good art being produced by students that could be out there..brightening peoples day

and making good photo's to boot.

Re: Public Art...discuss!

It always seemed to me that this sort of thing was a statement.

"This is art. You should like it"

Well, I don't!

Re: Public Art...discuss!

Me neither.

I find it insulting and as you can see I feel strongly about it because I have worked with
students who are creative and inventive beyond belief and who would not take payment for having their work exhibited in public.

I know times are hard..but even more reason for uplifting surroundings.

Re: Public Art...discuss!

I'd sooner see decent Graffiti to be honest. At least it's free.

Although, why not comission students to uplift an area? That's free too!

Re: Public Art...discuss!

Personally, I am all for public art, whatever shape or form, I have seen some stunning pieces and some neglected pieces, that have been stuck up and left to rot, but each piece is worthy in it's own right. I also enjoy art, kids can touch, and not be precious about, so visual and interactive.

Wouldn't it be great if it had some kind of 'lifespan'..giving new artists a chance and a fresh perspective?
