Night Heron! :D :D :D

Yay! Got it!

Went out at 5.30 this morning and hunted for it in the most likely spots. Found it pretty quickly (well, when it was light enough to look properly). Was wonderful, we got to watch it fishing, and then it flew back upstream and we got a few photos too. It was very low light though, so high ISO and a bit noisy. Forgive me, but I'm still *really* chuffed with them. Apart from my friend Charlie who was with us (and has stunning gear and managed some super shots because his gear copes better in low light), these are so far the best photos taken of a Night Heron in Ireland to our knowledge! was also Pic Of The Day on Irish Birding for a very short while (it changes a lot!)

Re: Night Heron! :D :D :D

Didn't know such a bird existed, so would love to see one for myself. The closest to that I have taken a picture of is this.

You are so lucky, looks as though a visit to your neck of the woods is called for

Nailed it Laura, you must be over the moon. As a birder im always so happy to photograph a wild creature, time spent in their company is special and unlike pets landscapes, etc dont always perform for a camera, when they do its a bonus.

What a cracking spot and capture, well done, impressed and jealous at the same time. Very dedicated getting up for 5.30am. The water levels looked low, are you suffering a lack of water like we are in the East.

Re: Night Heron! :D :D :D

Thanks guys!
No lack of water here Richard, it's a tidal part of the river - and it's very close to the sea, so sometimes we have low water, sometimes high What is interesting is seeing how the wildlife shifts throughout the day with the tides!

Thanks Brian, I am over the moon, just watching it was amazing enough, these are great memories, even if they wouldn't win any competitions! Did the same again this morning, and got a short video of him snuggling his bill into his breast as he went to roost - which was lovely!
