Canon G9

We were thinking of getting a DSLR and were thinking of the Olympus E510 or the Canon D450 but since have been reading about the Canon G9 which is just being or has been just released and it seems really good as a compact 10 mp SP,AP,M and a host of other functions, The thing that put us off a DSLR was dust on the sensors it seems to be a bitch to get rid of... Any advice on what I have written would be a bonus please...

Re: Canon G9

Canon D450? Do you mean the 400d (or the 450D when it comes out?) The only canon I know that is d450 is the canon SD450 (which is a point n shoot).

Personally, if I was recommending a camera to someone into or getting into photography I would say get a DSLR every time - the pictures are just much better quality imo, and you can also upgrade by getting more lens, better flash, tripods etc etc.

The only reason I would consider a point and shoot is for portability reasons - their compact size. Or I guess if you wanted video capture on there too as DSLRs don't do video capture at all.

Do you have a budget? Are there any other factors that will be important to you?

Ps will move this to the 'which camera?' section

Re: Canon G9

If just getting into photography, I would recommend at first a point and shoot first(many will likely disagree with me) of a decent quality, but not to expensive, just for the reason that if you dont, like alot of people do enjoy it or have as much time you wont be stuck with a whole lot of camera for maybe just family snaps and such. If you do take to it and it looks like becoming a big hobby you can upgrade to a DSLR(like I plan on doing).

Re: Canon G9

Sorry I meant the Canon D400 as the 450 hasn't yet been released I think I read somewhere about November this year the idea of the G9 is that it has everything for you to set up your photograph ie SP AP etc and I also read that DSLR's have a problem with dust on the sensors and the portability is a big plus
This Camera at the moment is retailing at around £300+ so not a cheap option

Re: Canon G9

Ite depends if you see yourself spending more in future I guess, eg more lens, better flash etc. If that's your budget and you don't want to go over it in the future and not bother abuot upgrades then a P&S is a good idea. But if you look around the photos sections and see lots of pics you really like, take a look at what camera and kit that person uses (go to their profile for the info). That should give you an idea of what kind of kit you might need to take the kind of pics you like... if that makes sense

Re: Canon G9

In my earlier post I stated that the G9 had 10 mp but I made a mistake it's 12.1mp we really think we are going for this one it's dead impressive and it has RAW...

Re: Canon G9

There are various considerations that need to be examined
1 = Price obviously, sods law states you will always see something better afterwards
2 = Compact against DSLR
3 = Deciding what photos you want to take nature- people- buildings etc
4 = Ease of use
5 = How far into digital photography do you want to go
6 = Do you want to add extras like flash- lenses- and the like
7 = Portability
8= Amount of use
9= Make ( would suggest narrowing the field down to 2 or 3)
10 = And the biggie, Will I get the bug and move up to a better camera and be prepared to loose cash on the upgrade

Re: Canon G9

One thing to remember is that the more megapixels there are it doesn't guarantee a 'better' camera... You could get a far better 8MP camera than a 10MP camera based on their comparative features, quality of lenses etc. It's easy to think that just because it has more megapixels that it's a better camera. Hope that helps someone when they consider a new camera... (Just look at some of the cheaper Vivitar point and shoot compacts - they boast loads of megapixels - but actually take some pretty poor shots)
