What surprised me was when I took these with long exposures rather than flash - the Nikon lens focussed straight away but without the flash assist the Canon lens wouldn't find the detail to focus unless I either manually focussed or chose a definite edge or bit of writing to focus on.
It may be down to the way they were set though.

I've only just got the Canon and haven't really used it other than a few shots in the house. The Nikon I've had for years and it's been a great camera. I guess build wise and spec wise this Canon model 'should' be better than this Nikon model but I've done nothing with it yet to support that view.
I'll let you know once I've used it a bit more.

Thanks Im looking to buy another camera as soon as funds allow! Darrieboy (member) and I are always fighting over our canon, I really like it, its the 300D. But if we were to get another not sure to go for same or better!! Both of us fancy getting a Nikon! So still really deliberating on which!
