Falling off

Poor lil thing, must have fallen off it's nest. I started shooting from a far, at first w/ the K20D and a DA* 50-135mm, then slowly and carefully getting closer, until I got this shot. Live view helped out a lot, as I was able to get the D700 right in front at a good level angle. Finally, the bird scooted off under the tree's as it was calling for it's mama...

Re: Falling off

That's a great shot.

My bird pics are rubbish so I can't really comment on the technical aspects but it would have been brilliant to have all the feathers in sharp focus. Those nearest ones are just out ?

What I love is the way you've captured 'the moment' and the bird is looking back up - it really tells a story - it's obvious it's just a fledgling that has come a cropper and it's trying to make sense of it all.

Re: Falling off

thanks for the comments all
I do hope it got back up to it's nest and all.

@ phil. yeah, i wouldve loved to have the whole bird in focus...the part by it's neck is a bit soft...too. It was hard trying to get it 'right'

between trying to tell my cousin to shut up and not startle the thing, switching between the k20 and the d700, and trying to get the d700 in front w/o startling it was tough enough as it was...I took 3 close ups similar to that...and that being the best..(adjusting in between)...after that shot, it took off...
but it is all about the moment...and i'm glad I was able to get that

You certainly captured a 'moment'

I can relate to your frustration I often have my eldest daughter with me and she can startle landscapes never mind timid birds.

Perhaps one day our exif data can let everybody know what we've had to contend with

Re: Falling off

Nice image, the colours are very natural and the composition is very good. The focus is very nice too, if you got really close the mathematics of lens function means you are never going to get load of DoF anyway, normally I like the eye to be in focus, but as the bird is looking up and the eye is drawn from the (broken looking) foot all the way up to the end of the beak, it is only fitting that the beak is in focus, and that works really well.

All the best,
Alan.
