These shots were taken at the Sonoran Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona. They have a large number of raptors there and regularly give in flight demonstrations of Harris Hawks, often 4 or 5 birds at once. They are fantastic to watch.
Pics 1 and 3 are juvenile birds, pic 2 is an adult who has just had lunch, the droplets of blood still showing on beak.
A few factoids on Harris Hawks:
The ornithologist, Audobon, gave the bird the name Harris Hawk, after his friend Colonel Harris. It is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, extending south through Central and South America to Chile and just into Patagonia.
In the wild Harris Hawks will live up to 12-14 years, in captivity they can live for twice that long.
Harris Hawks are one of the few broadwinged hawks that will readily hunt in a team (sometimes called a cast), when they are socialised with each other. When hunting as a team, they will take turns in flushing the quarry while the others wait & attack when flushed. They feed mostly on small mammals such as rats and mice, but also takes birds and lizards.
They build their nest in saguaros, palo verdes and mesquite trees at an average height of 5 meters. In urban areas, nests can be found on cottonwoods, ironwoods, palm trees and electrical towers. Nests are platforms made of sticks, weeds, twigs, and are usually lined with soft mosses, grasses and roots. Between two and four eggs are laid between late February and March. Females have the ability to breed all year long and can lay two to three clutches within a year.
