Re: Painted Desert Arizona

Wikipedia says: The desert is composed of stratified layers of easily erodible siltstone, mudstone, and shale of the Triassic Chinle Formation. These fine grained rock layers contain abundant iron and manganese compounds which provide the pigments for the various colors of the region. Thin resistant lacustrine limestone layers and volcanic flows cap the mesas.

As regards the photographs, it was November 2011 and I was located on the side of a hill overlooking the mesa, the temperature was low - below freezing. I waited until very late in the afternoon, with the sun sometimes peeping through the clouds and on those occasions i took a series of shots with my D90 mounted on a tripod. Some worked some didn't. In the second shot you can see the red cliff reflected up to the clouds, making them pink. Hence the name - The Painted Desert.
