Re: Nikon 50mm 1.8 and 1.4 prices for CL

Stu - The 50mm is mostly used as a portraiture lens due to its wide apperture giving good DoF, but they are good for most things as they are sharp and value for money. Mine is always mounted.

The smaller apperture allows for shooting in low light conditions without the need for flash - It could come in useful for sports photography, but not as good as other lenses available and wouldnt excell as its doubtfull you would be shooting as wide as 1.8 or 1.4.

IMO they are definatly a must have lens as the results they produce are excellent for the price and they are also very versatile. You will find that many photographers will have a version of this lens in their kits...

It is doubtful that either of these lenses would be good for sports photography unless they are vastly different to their Canon counterparts. On a Canon, the AF on the 1.8 would not be able to cope and although the 1.4 is better again it is not noted as being a decent lens for sports photography. If you want to focus manually on a fixed point then you may get better results, but it will be very hit and miss.
