I say go for it Phil – don’t even think about it.
You will never regret it or think it was a waste. I have the Canon EF 100 2.8 – and it’s great. There is a learning curve to using it effectively (I have a long way to go!) but it is loads of fun and really does open a whole different world of potential pics.
It does also open a whole of potential embarrassment when people find you burrowing into a bed of flowers or similar after some elusive spider or something. Recently I was on my hands and knees crawling through some frosty grass trying to get a good angle on the sunlight. I had my ears plugged into an I-pod and didn’t hear a vehicle driving up behind me and stopping to watch. Given that there were two rhinos grazing a few dozen meters off (I had originally stopped for them) the passengers of the vehicle thought I was a bit odd to say the least. When I realized they were there, I bolted up and mumbled something about ice crystals on grass and went bright red. I think they are still talking about it.
