Wide Angle Lens

Hi

I'm looking to get a wide angle lens for use with my Canon 40d

Two that have in mind are:

Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 DC HSM or the new Sigma10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM although I'm not sure what the price of the new one is.
Two I've ruled out are the Canon EF-S 10-22mm F3.5-4.5 USM and the Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 Di-II

At the moment I'm shooting most of my landscapes with my widest lens which is the Canon EF-S 17-85mm F4.0-5.6 IS USM. Despite it being a great every day 'walkabout' lens I just want the extra width for landscapes.

I'd been putting off getting a wide APS 'crop' lens as I was considering going full frame soon with an EF 17-40mm F4 L USM or similar but I've decided to leave that move for a while.

Does anybody have any of these lenses and if so would they recommend them or something else perhaps ?

Thanks

Re: Wide Angle Lens

Phil, I had the original 10-20 Sig and was very happy with it. For the cost it was brilliant and the image quality was good just a little soft in the corners and best from f/9 to f/11 on the whole. I only sold it to replace it with a non dx lens.

Re: Wide Angle Lens

Do you need/want 10mm? That focal length can make for some interesting shots!

Also, will you be going Full frame any time soon?

Re: Wide Angle Lens

I use the Sigma 10-20 loads - it's a great bit of kit and would recommend it wholesale.

Thanks for that. With landscapes I'm most likely to be shooting with smaller apertures for greater depth of focus so that should be OK.

Yes - It's 10mm (widest) that I'm after - not looking for whacky fisheye type though.

I'd been considering going FF in July this year. Now I've decided to wait perhaps 12 more months so I'd be happy to invest in a wide APS lens.

Thanks

I saw in your sig you had one listed against both your Canon and your Nikon.

Have you got two ?

Re: Wide Angle Lens

Naaaa........ but when I changed from canon to Nikon, I vowed to get the 10-20 Nikon fit because I was so impressed with the canon fit that I knew I would miss it. If I put ANY lens in my bag - this would always be my first choice.

Well it was worth checking you didn't have a Canon fit model gathering dust

It certainly seems to come out on top in a lot of the tests. Not just for the money but also 'overall' against the two main brands.

I think I'll be trawling the £-web over the next week or so.

Re: Wide Angle Lens

I have a Sigma 10-20 and Sigma 12-24. I bought the 10/20 simply because it is smaller and lighter than the other when in a flight bag. It's a good quality, fun lens but the 12/24 is more serious and produces less distortion - and it will go on a full frame. Many people suggest the Tokina 12-24mm. I think it may depend on whether you are wanting extreme wide angles or not and bowed buildings. Few of the best landscapes in photographic history are on extreme wide angles.
Kit 1
Nikon D700
Nikon 28-70 f2.8 ED AF-S (The Beast)
Nikon 80-200mm f2.8
Tamron 24-135 SP

Nikon 70-300mm VR
Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 (DX)
Nikon 28-105mm (great walkaround on D700!)

Nikon 20-35mm f2.8
Nikon SB800

Ah that's good to know BC

I know you 'can' fit a 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM to a full frame camera but Sigma do say that as it's designed for smaller sensors the reduced image circle will cause serious vignetting.

I thought the 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG ASHPHERICAL HSM was the same in that it 'can' but having dug a bit deeper I see that it is indeed sold as 'suitable' for full frame. That makes quite a difference.

Swiped......

DG (DG Lens)
These are large-aperture lenses with wide angles and short minimum focusing distances. With an abundance of peripheral illumination, they are ideal lenses for Digital SLR Cameras whilst retaining suitability for traditional 35mm SLRs.

DC (DC Lens)
These are special lenses designed so that the image circle matches the smaller size of the image sensor of most digital SLR cameras. Their specialized design gives these lenses the ideal properties for digital cameras, the compact and lightweight construction is an added bonus ! including compact and lightweight construction.
