Which Lens/

Hi All,
I have an Olympus E-420 DSLR and being a bit of a keeno with my new camera wondered if anybody could tell me what would be the best lense for taking pics of dogs, mainly at shows?
Thanks,

Re: Which Lens/

Depends how close he can get to the dogs really PD. If he can't get very close he may want something like a 55-200 or 70-200. Not sure what the Oly equivalents are but the faster the better (lower f number = faster)

Yes, or up to 300 - should be a decentish all round zoom lens, without being too big and heavy!

Re: Which Lens/

Jeff

Knowing dog shows you are usually about 20ft away from the centre of the ring where the lineups take place. As you know this is the generally accepted time to take photos after the judjing has taken place. Also you have to consider if the judging is indoors or outdoors so allow for that as well.

Taking on average at least half dog shows are indoors then I would be looking for an f2.8 lens that would cover those 20 or so feet distance, presuming you are taking photos from ringside and not going into the ring itself.

It would let you get those closeup shots without upsetting the dog or owner. If its like my Sigma lens yes it is a bit on the heavy side, but for me thats all for the good as it lessens camera movement. For the type of usage you want to put it to I would recommend a monopod for it as well.

Ok which lens? I would go for the

" Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO EX DG Macro MkII 4/3rds Fit" at around £650 (forget the macro bit)

Which is designed for your make of camera and would go some way to compensate for not being able to use flash at some shows.

I have the equivilant Sigma version for the Nikon and it is a great lens for what you need it for. This would allow you to get those shots from outside the ring and freeze most movements, even indoors.
