The birds are not impressed

My next door neighbour has recently installed a bird feeder station. The only visitors I have seen in over a week are our resident Wood Pigeons. They emptied the bottom tray at one sitting and now come back just for the water.

Niko

Maybe the bird feeder is too exposed and Raptors would find it easy prey. I have my 3 bird feeders hanging from tree branches where they have at least some sort of cover

Re: The birds are not impressed

Niko we have one of these with four feeder stations, in the open, and the birds were never off it, I was filling it up daily. This time of the year most birds will feed on natural foods. Wait till Autumn/Winter and they will use it.

Now we are retired we will have to cut back as the last 2 winters we have spent about £250 each year on various bird food. The favourite is Sunflower hearts

Re: The birds are not impressed

You say they added it 'recently'

That's probably the key thing. It takes a little while for birds to start using a new feeding station and in a residential area there are probably other feeders they use.

At this time of year there's lots of natural food available for them too.

If they stick with it then I'm sure the birds will start to use it sooner or later.

As for predators. There's nothing wrong with a sparrowhawk taking a bird from a feeder after all they have to eat too. Cats are far more of a problem than raptors so it's quite good that it's out in the open like that.
