Re: D90 it's out on order - which lens?

Well it seems to be bundled with a 18-105 which is not really enough for me so although I will probably only have one lens to start with I will need, I think, a 24 or 28 to about 300mm, a fast prime about 50mm and a macro prime somewhere between 70mm & 105mm.

So any advise or comment would be welcome, I am not sure about the Nikon AF system, does it work with all lens with a Nikon fitting or do you have to watch which lens with which model? I really am stupid about buying lens for anything but the Pentax that seems to be a, as long as it is a K mount it will work system

Re: D90 it's out on order - which lens?

The D90 works with all Nikon digital lenses (ie doesn't have the same 'problem' as the D40/d60 as it has an af motor built in).

Well it looks like you already know what you need There are two great 50mm primes, 1.4 and 1.8 - just depends on your budget which one you will most likely go for.

And how about the Nikon 18-200 VR? It's around £400

Re: D90 it's out on order - which lens?

Thanks Azz, 200mm is not really enough, if Nikon don't do a suitable lens I know Sigma do as I already have one, shame you can't unscrew the Pentax mount and screw the Nikon one on. Don't know if you are old enough to remember the days when you bought a lens and then an adaptor to suit your body, guess that AF put pay to that very useful feature of the old 35mm days.

Not quite that old Snapper

Nikon do a whole range of lenses, I just suggested the 18-200 as it covers quite a bit of what you wanted..

How about the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm VR? It's just under £300

Re: D90 it's out on order - which lens?

Azz thanks will look at the 70mm - 300mm but think the 70mm may not be close enough, sorry I don't know what term to use when talking about the angle/length of a lens. When shooting dogs in the show ring, which is what I do most, one needs to be able to fill the viewfinder with the whole of the dog and the said dog can be anything from right in front of you to many feet away, and you have no control of where it is. Find the 28-300mm I have at the moment just the job.

Phil, thanks for that well worth knowing because if I take this step I will not be able to get the lens that I think I need straight away so if the adaptors are not too much I may well go that route, do you know who sells them or is it that they don’t advertise?

Re: D90 it's out on order - which lens?

Sanpper, a 70mm -300mm would be plenty for dog shows. You wont get a wider range than that off a zoom (other than the 200mm-400mm which is the best part of 4.5K).

For head shots i would go for the 85mm. Its awsome and tack sharp. Perfect for dogs as you can fill the frame without being to close to become a distraction..

Re: D90 it's out on order - which lens?

With your experience I am sure you are right but I found that if I tried to use the 100mm - 300mm I own it was no good then the dog was within a couple of meters or less of me where as the 28mm - 300mm is fine. Did not want to spend out on the 70mm - 300mm and find it was not of any use to me. Think the best thing I can do is get the adaptor and try the 100mm - 300mm lens and try to judge if the 70mm would be of any use to me before I send too much of my pension.
