Re: Jumpy Bikes

It goes without saying that what appeals to the majority will be different to that published in 'trade' or 'specialist' magazines. I like these and will be back a good few times to enjoy again.

It is not surprising I like the close on action shots as I am one who thinks motor sport was ruined when the participants started using full face helmets. Somehow if it does not include a recognisable human the interest wains.

The difference being an image of a trick or an image of a person displaying a skill, the first will appeal to others in, or followers of the particular sport or skill and everyone else will like the second.

Re: Jumpy Bikes

Everyone likes different things - and that covers the professional market too. There will always be a market for both types - there is no right or wrong, and I think that saying that *only* wide shots are acceptable, is not only wrong but unfair.

I appreciate that you may know some of the industry Tommy (not all of it - no-one knows all of anything!), however, there will be a market for Ste's sort of shooting. It's highly unfair to say it's wrong for him to shoot things the way he does.

And in any case, this is all presuming that Ste's intention with these photos was leaning towards professional - he may have just taken them this way because he liked them this way!!!

Re: Jumpy Bikes

I'll back Tommy on this one. I think showing the take-off and landing would improve these so much more. Is this a 50ft gap or 100ft gap? No idea. Also, I am seeing some haloing around the riders. Maybe just my monitor?

Re: Jumpy Bikes

Hey Worsely - welcome to YoP

Re the images, I can't see any haloing around the riders here. Re your point about the jumps - I really do appreciate that people into the sport may want to see them, but from an artistic viewpoint, I think these work really well as they are, too

Re: Jumpy Bikes

I can't see any halo either, the back wheel in shot 4 is moving but that is bound to happen if the camera is really close into the action.

Welcome Worsley, you, like others will have different opinions as to what they wish to see in an image, for me I don't care how big the gap is or even what the obstacle was I prefer to see the human effort involved a dot in the sky over, sometimes unattractive scenery, does not appeal to me. But I am look to appreciate the image not the skill of the sport.

Re: Jumpy Bikes

If I look long enough I can see halo - and was chatting to Woodsey5 about this last night, and he agreed, it's not so much a halo, as if you look long enough at the pics (and you don't have to look very long either), there's sort of an optical illusion. Our guess was that the colour of the background alongside the colour of the main subject creates some sort of optical illusion.

Re: Jumpy Bikes

Worsley,

you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that, but with these photo's the focus is on the trick. Featuring all the ramps, and the rider and the tricks would all look the same from the size that the rider would be on the shot. Not to mention the crowd, lots of trees and various other things that were distractions. If I'd posted a shot like there would have been as many comments saying that i should have done a close up!!!

Please all, and you please none.
