When does Photography become Art

I'm very new to photography, and untill just recently I thought that it just consisted of, one way or another, taking the best picture you can and striving to get that 'perfect' shot.

What I didn't realize was, with the help of places like photoshop, you could turn a brilliant/decent/good/poor photo into something that has the wow factor, but to me, and I don't mean to offend anyone, to me it is no longer a photo, it is a stunning piece of art.

So back to my original question, when does photography stop being photography and become art?

I've not played in photoshop (yet) and may one day get the bug, but for those of you who do, do you take pictures to get that 'perfect' photo, or do you take a picture with the intent to work your magic on it it p s.

This is just a general question, and not intended to offend or put down in anyway those who create these stunning pictures in p s. I'm just curious that's all

Photography is an art. But it will start becoming more self expressed as you go on and find your niche

Art is in the intent of the artist and in the eye of the beholder. just like other art forms there are very many individual forms.It is a personal expression. Photoshop/ other packages allow this expression but I too am interested in the answer to the question below

To me its an art as you have to think about the bigger picture and not just your subject. The background and things around your subject have to be well thought out too as they can make or break a photo. Although sometimes luck will take over and you get the perfect shot

I understand what you mean, but isn't that the art of photography, and not the photo becoming a piece of art. Sorry I'm not trying to nit pic, just eager to learn and understand

Phrased better its an art form just like batiqs, embroidery etc..

Up until quite recently I only ever used PS to enhance my photos you know to adjust the contrast or to greyscale them, but recently I've fooling around with p s and I'm starting to enjoy trying different things, but I'll have to keep practicing just now

I try to take the perfect photo every time ....and that is where the problem lies....quite often the photo I want to take exists only in my imagination Sometimes the pic comes out beautifully ...sometimes it needs tweaking to get what I can see in my head ...

Art of course, is in the eye of the beholder Never someting to fall out about

I think photography is an art whether its a straight capture or a tweaked image, and of course melody is right its all in the eye of the beholder.
