Rule Of Thirds Explained

What is the rule of thirds?

The rule of thirds is a concept which helps you produce aesthetically pleasing photographs. The idea is to place the main subject on a point or a line of interest.

When composing a photograph you need to ask yourself what you are looking to capture and identify what the main points of interest are. You then need to visualise a grid and attempt to place the main points of interest where the lines intersect. When shooting landscapes, ideally the horizon should fall on one of the horizontal lines.

Below are a couple of examples:

In the first example, the dogs are placed on the points where the lines intersect. In both photographs, the horizon is (roughly ) on one of the horizontal lines.

For more about composition and the rule of thirds, please see Composition in our Photography Basics guides.
