I suspect 1 should be the sharpest but also the noisiest.

2 should have less noise but the noise reduction will have reduced the sharpness.

I guess it's a case of trading one for the other.

I much prefer the first Phil. The second looks to smooth and has artifacts from the noise reduction, especially in the darker areas.

To lessen the noise have you tried shooting two stops under and then lightening in PP??

Cheers - Amongst other things yes.

This was really to see how one particular quick NR treatment appears - using a 'noisy' picture I've already taken as an example - as I've a few similar.

Its not that the edit is bad, its just that in comparison to the original its not as good And tbh i really cant see enough noise in the first to warrant any PP?? Have you experimented on something noisier?

I don't own anything noisier

I typed that first of all and then changed it.

Need more than noise reduction for my kids - a crop perhaps.
