The method is correct but he applied it wrong - you rarely need to go that far either end, doing so will give you an 'extreme' or somewhat false-looking contrast. Use it more subtly and to lighten an image don't use the right hand slider but use the middle one, moving it to the left. Again, minor adjustments will usually be better and more professional looking.

I'd say he was pretty spot on in the video... there's no valuable pixel data in the blank spaces either side, so you're not going to lose anything by going as far as he does...
