I bought it - what next!

I've ordered a 450D of amazon for £450 inc 18-55mm lens

I would much prefer a lens I can use for everything though. What would people recommend for under £200? I was looking at sigma and tamron 18-200?

Re: I bought it - what next!

Hi and welcome to the group

What I would suggest is that first of all get to know what the camera/lens combination is capable of. From that basis it will give a better idea if your looking from the macro to the longer telephoto lens.

There is no one lens does all, and the greater the range, ie the tamron 18-200, the more allowance in the manufacture of the lens quality to accommodated its purpose. A prime lens glass can be ground down to a more specific mm setting but does cost a lot more.

I notice you are into sports photography so lenses with f2.8 are really the area to look at

In reality, if your looking in that price range generally speaking, you won't be getting first class glass, you may be better off staying with your purchase and saving a bit more money giving you more choice.

Hope you havn't fogotten to buy a memory card for the camera? I prefer Sandisk 1V x 4 gig for transfer speed and storage amount.

Re: I bought it - what next!

Yep, I remembered the memory card! (sandisk 4gb sdhc extreme III Class 6)

I know the quality wont be the same on a wide range lens but I just can't practically see myself swapping lenses so whatever is on it needs to do everything (and I'm already zooming in on the 18-55 kit lens and wishing it would go further!)

I like to take lots of photos - not so much into the "3hours for 1perfect shot" photograph (yet!) - From experience I know that I often go from close up "portrait shots" to "full zoom" shots so I'd be swapping every 2minutes!

I've just got a mju 790sw at the moment so speed and quality will be a vast improvement whatever I get!

Nice one

For a budget of £200 - an all round lens such as an 18-200 sounds like a good choice. But just remember it won't be the best quality, as generally primes (lens at a fixed focal length) give you the best in quality. Good luck and let us know how you get on!
