Disappointed with TZ7

Hello

We bought a TZ7 as a long awaited point and shoot pocket alternative to our much loved Canon Pro1.

Now even though our canon is just a bridge camera its always given us fantastic photo quality and have been really happy with it- just proving to big for everyday photos out with our wee boy and the dog.

After much deliberation etc we went for the TZ7 and have had it for a few days but really disappointed with the photo quality when viewed large as photos seem really noisy..

seems to produce a quite bubblejet type of image if that makes sense ( i am very much an amateur so not sure of the "professional" word for it, but basically looks very pixelated rather than a proper photo.

Is this about the norm for P&S cameras and are we just expecting too much, we are thinking about sending it back and just getting a cheaper alternative as for £220 it seems pretty expensive for the quality compared with our 5yr old 8MP, 7x zoom canon powershot pro 1.....

i do like the wide angle lense and the auto features on it, just dont like the very end result but not sure if we could change lots of settings and whether it will make a huge difference.
The outdoor photos arent too bad but indoors in artificial light arent the best
any thoughts ??

thanks
dani

Re: Disappointed with TZ7

Post a few pics up Dani so we can see. But yeah, there's only so much a P&S will be able to do quality wise. Personally I'd rather get the cheapest Nikon DSLR or cheapest Canon DSLR.. for about an extra hundred quid

Nikon D3000 Lens Kit (18-55mm II non-VR) £369.00
EOS 1000D Lens Kit (EF-S 18-55) £369.00

How about a second hand DSLR?
Kit 1
Nikon D300
Nikon 55-200mm VR
Kit 2
Nikon D40
Nikon 18-55mm
My Compact/P&S: Panasonic Lumix TZ7

Re: Disappointed with TZ7

for some reason my computer keeps crashing whenever i try and load anything so think its about to die a death !!!

I think its more to do with tweaking the settings - just cant believe all the reviews its been getting and how amazing they are and we have both opened it and thought whats all the fuss about???

Its the size Azz - I wanted something smaller and to be fair the Canon is smaller than a DSLR anyway so certainly dont want to go bigger than that- I want a pocket sized camera that still takes good if not great shots !!! I want a DSLR that fits in my pocket !! LOL

I think I want something i cant get by the sounds of things - i just thought for the money we spent we should be getting better quality images...

will try and post pics tommorow if I can once I try and clobber my PC a bit !!

Re: Disappointed with TZ7

Awww that's a shame, I LOVE my Panasonic P&S, I have a teeny Panasonic FX 12, and I love the quality of the Leica lens. I always keep it in my bag TBH, it's only 7MP but I have taken some good shots with it. I also have a Panasonic FZ50 which is bigger.

Sorry, you don't like yours I am giving mine to my kids soon as I've had it for awhile, and wanted another teeny P&S to keep in my bag, and was actually going to buy the TZ7

Re: Disappointed with TZ7

Indoor with artificial light is a big ask for a p & s.
I borrowed my dad's canon G9 this week which is a great camera- but coudn't believe the noise on more indoor shots! Luckily I could whack my speedlight on top to give better light.

Re: Disappointed with TZ7

thats just it I dont know if we are just being unreasonable in what we expect from it as we are only used to the bridge camera...

WE have another day before we need to decide whether its going back or not, so I will try and post some pics up here and see what you all think...

I just expected more from a £220 worth of camera !! our canon only cost us £350 5 years ago and its superb quality for what it is..

arrgghh decisions, who knows what to do !!!

we were thinking of sending it back and just getting the TZ6 or even TZ5 or ZX1 and just accepting the limitations but saving ourselves £60+ in the process.

when you read all the reviews for it, users love it so perhaps we are just expecting too much from a P&S.

Re: Disappointed with TZ7

ok photos
into the sun so not too unhappy with that

Bright sunlight coming through window so no artificial light.

in the car

again outside in bright sunlight.

indoor

no flash

composition and quality of the person behind the lense aside !! LOL
these are literally just snaps...on auto.

they all look ok as normal photos but when you view them at 100% you gets loads of noise etc - so they are fine as 4x6 and web shots but i am concerned that if I want to blow up any shots of my son or dog specifically the quality just wont be there.

do you think that this is about normal quality and the best we should expect from a p&s?

are my expectations just too high??
just as a comparison I am posting a photo taken with our canon last year

Re: Disappointed with TZ7

thanks azz,
we are none the wiser about what to do. I think its down to our expectations, however have been tweaking the camera this afternoon so will see if that improves things.

Re: Disappointed with TZ7

TBH I have tweaked all my settings on my P&S, I have it set up how I like it, and then just adjust the WB, ISO depending on the weather and if I am indoors or out. etc. Do you have it set on the highest quality jpg setting?

There should be a scene menu, where you can choose, landscape, portrait, pet, night etc, and it does a lot of the stuff for you if you aren't sure. You should be able to alter your colour, as I remember Neutral is very flat in tones.
