100-400 is a lovely lens, and I agree the 7D will be better for animal stuff, its the one Id like.

I don't get the battery grip either!
I have one with my 300D but never use it. It makes the camera heavier and harder to hold steady.
The spare battery is easy to keep in my bag and pop in when needed.
