Re: Canon 100-400 L IS - My new lense

Hi Gordon. Great choice on lens, as for the body choice, either combination will produce excellent results. If you need speed, go for the 7d (8fps), or if you want the very best in IQ then go for the 5dMKII (3.9fps). I know you like to shoot wildlife, so I would say go for the 7d as it will be the best all-rounder.

Just to add, the 5dMKII will be much better for shooting in low light as it can produce clean images up to 4500 ISO and beyond. I'm not sure how much better the 7d is in low light compared with the 50d, but I normally switch body's if I have to shoot above 2000 ISO using my 50d.

Canon 5D MKII
Canon 400mm f5.6 L
Canon 70-200mm f4.0 L

Oh wow what I choice! They both sound fabulous!
I do sometimes dream of having a 5DII but I am far too clumsy and inexperienced to have one!

Do you want a FF sensor (5D) or not (7D)

If you are not fussed on a FF sensor, buy the 7D and spend the difference on another lens.

Hi Alan
I am not that fussed about the FF I also want to buy 17-40 L lens
but am not quite sure on what one to buy DJ pointed out about the speed of the 7D. I think it might be the 7D plus the grip. As DJ said I like to photograph wildlife. I am looking for a good all rounder.

Cheers Goggs....

I have the 100-400 and the 17-40 too I bought a FF body because I wanted the true width of the 17-40 lens, I appreciate that shooting wildlife probably doesn't need a very wide lens (except maybe Giraffes lol)

I don't know about the battery grip either, I personally consider them a total waste of money when you can just change the battery manually in a few seconds, I don't have any problem taking portrait shots with the normal button either.

I would imagine a lot of wildlife shots could be done with a tripod and shutter release?

Spend the money you save on a (grossly overpriced) battery box on memory cards etc
