What can I do about the blown out sky, I don't like it either, remember I only have gimp or picasa

When you expose correctly for a darker subject, the highlights (lighter parts) become to bright, resulting in them being blown out, this also includes the sky. If you expose for the sky, the rest of your image will be to dark. Its difficult if not almost impossible to find a right balance without the use of a gradual ND filter, multiple exposures (creating HDR) or post processing (with a RAW file). Also a fill flash will help in some situations.

If the sky's just too light (but not completely burned out) you can add a layer with a gradualted top to bottom. This will darken your sky without darkening the whole image.

I agree, the B&W version is my favourite, but then I have never been a huge fan of Sepia.
