Re: Starter kit for lighting

Have a look at warehouse express, they have a range from simple white light reflectors up to complex studio lighting .You could get a flashgun with a swivel head to "bounce" the light of a wall /ceiling.
There are several things to consider= how large is the subject you want to light up- do you want a semi static light as in studio lighting- do you want mobile as in flashgun- cost obviously- do you want a plain light reflective panel?

Like most things in photography there are specific tools for each job, there is not a one for all purpose.
I am happy for my Nikon to use the SB600 flashgun for indoor/outdoor use, would prefer the SB800 but costs come into it.

Maybe you would find something in ebay which is second hand but has a swivel head which is a must on a flashgun

Re: Starter kit for lighting

I think that if I get one of the light box affairs and may be I can find flash lamps that can be rotated or I think in the case of my DSLR fired remotely. I do think that on camera flashes have their place but only in conjunction with daylight otherwise the effect is not nice.

The other problem I find with flash light is that you can’t see what effect they will have until you have taken the shot, and 30 odd shots before you get what you want is somewhat tiresome. However I will go and look at what is on offer and see what I can afford and what can be stored, what with OH and myself we are tripping over tripods as it is.

Re: Starter kit for lighting

Guess what, had a scrabble in the box that houses my discarded photographic bits, not now used but can't part with sort of things, and I found a flash lamp with bracket and hand grip that I used to use on my old SLR Pentax ME - and it still works and more to the point it still works on my new, well nearly new, Pentax ist, so I have a dedicated auto flash that will work with my DSLR

Also, I have ordered a Light tent with a couple of cheap little lamps on stands, so that should get me started think next I need a reflector but need to get used to what I now have, or will have hopefully by mid week.

Re: Starter kit for lighting

I know, had another scrabble and found the instructions, even better as the lamp is covered with numbers and scales and the only one I understand is the ISO setting although I think one of the other is just so you know the angle you have set the head to, goodness life is exciting this morning.
