Auld Stirling Bridge

It's closed to traffic now, built in the 15th century it was the gateway to the north west highlands.

Re: Auld Stirling Bridge

Lovely looking bridge, has great textures

Can you walk on it? love to see what the views are like from on top of it. The greens and the yellows in the foilage, really compliment the bridge.

Re: Auld Stirling Bridge

Yes, it's open to pedestrians, it still has the cobble stoned surface, there's recesses in the walls where the customs and excise men use to collect duties from the cattle drovers who came from the highland with their cattle and sheep once a year.

The cattle market is just a mile further up the road and it's still used today.

Re: Auld Stirling Bridge

Forgot to mention, the red masonry on the arch closest to the left is a repair done after the English military commander (General Wade) in Stirling Castle blew it up in 1745 during the Jackobite rebellion.

Re: Auld Stirling Bridge

Nice bridge, though it looks like the local council haven't paid much attention to the surrounding area and the amount of what look like weeds.

Ooooh! Now I'm envious! You folks have some really cool stone bridges. Nice one.

I really like this picture, but I can not help thinking it looks a little flat (from a contrast point of view)

Maybe add a bit of contrast to bring out the detail?

Alan.
