I cant sit still..

Luke and I had a play on set after the clients went away This was one that we did

The baby shots came out great, but the father refused permission to post ( I always ask for this) Im gutted i cant share. I used the set up above as I didnt like how the black background was coming out Even went as far as buying a stack of towels to pop baby on!

Re: I cant sit still..

Looks like a neat set-up Sam - glad the shoot went well. The only thing I'd say is it looks quite light, with a lack of contrast (but can see why you may want that for a baby-shoot).

Re showing your work, personally I would cover things like showcasing work in my terms, and wouldn't specifically ask for permission (as it's my work at the end of the day and I have a right to add it to my portfolio). However if they don't want for it to be show, then I'd be more that willing to selling them the copyright - we'd just need to negotiate a price.

Re: I cant sit still..

Thanks Azz - the set up is light due to the particular PP i did on these shots. Ill post the original exposure in the morning. I was going a a kind of vintage type feel for these ones as i thought it suited it it.

With regards to posting permission, it is something worth considering for sure. Copies will be going in my hand portfolio, just not showcased online - which is fustrating. I guess i worry to much that i may lose business if the customers know that they cant stop me from using their images online, especially when it comes to kids......

Re: I cant sit still..

I meant to ask the other day Sam, the one thing I know that really 'hurts' people is the viewing of the images. For anybody that has had a photo shoot you will know that there are so many shots that you would like but the 'package' you choose (ultimately your budget) often means you have to leave the photographer with a load of shots that you would love to have but can't.

Anyway. Last time we had some done I enquired (having purchased our set) about whether or not we could purchase the digital files.

The poor unsuspecting photographer / employee was nearly tempted by a few crisp notes and a memory stick but in the end - no joy.

I know 'they' keep the rights to the images for a set time in the hope you go back for more but the (very honest non corruptable lady) asked me to fill out the suggestion form as they were considering an additional 'file only' purchase package.

I know it wouldn't be as profitable but I wondered if you've considered something similar ?

Re: I cant sit still..

I actually have that option as part of my price list Phil. I have the option to buy printing rights at £80 per 20 images or Copyright which is set at £500 per 20 images.

Its at the bottom of my price List (pg7) http://www.kanikula-photography.co.u...ist%202009.pdf

I did this for the exact reason you stated and have just encountered this with a recent shoot. I dont do packages as such so clients are able to pick and choose to their hearts content.

Re: I cant sit still..

So 20 'files' sold @ £4.00 you could still do you what you want with - use on your website or post one here for example.

20 'files' sold @ £25.00 you can't really do much with them once you've handed them over ?

Is that right ?

Just trying to get my head around it.

Dare I mention the company that begin with 'V' ?

After you've walked away with your goods they retain your files for 6 months / 12 months or whatever it is before they (by all accounts) delete them. You would think if you hadn't been back for additional stuff that they would contact you with a final last 'attractive' offer. I know everybody would just wait till their time was up and get them at the 'ready to delete' cut down price but it does seem such a shame.

Re: I cant sit still..

When i sell printing rights to a customer, they will get a signed agreement (from both parties) stating the terms of the release. Printing rights is just that, they can only print, but not publish ect unless otherwise stated.

Handing over copryright is a big issue. I would no longer have any access to those original files. Not even for portfolio use. The buyer of the copyright, can do whatever they wish with their files.

I Intend on keeping my images for three years before offering further prints ect -(I keep a record of al my clients addresses and phone numbers). I believe many photographers do this?...

I guess family portraits are most likely to be shared as prints amongst the family which is fair enough. 'Publish' is one thing but I'm not sure you can do much about a quick scan and email to friends and forums though.

It is a big issue and there should be a big difference in price as you could see the best examples of yor work walk out the door.

Fascinating to see how the whole thing works anyway.
