If you're taking close up pics (like portraits) to obtain a better DOF use a tele lense and keep your distance from the subject.

My 20 - 80 and 80 - 200 are ideal for this, the closer you get to the subject reduces the DOF, when I take a face-on pic of the dogs heads I sometimes notice the nose is in focus and the eyes/ears are slightly out of focus or vice-versa.

It can work the other way of course, you may want the subject partially out of focus, to get that effect, move closer in.

I know it is a long time since anyone left a message on the subject of Depth of Field. This can be a nightmare for some people.
