What Do You Do With Your Pictures?

I was wondering what people do with their pictures on two fronts really?

1) Do you delete all the useless images you don't want and keep the best?

I have generally kept most of mine, but I have 3TB of stuff now (lots of other things here too plus duplicate backups) but need to be a bit more prudent what is kept as my good stuff I'm sure would fit on a flash drive )

2) Ok, so what do you do with your good stuff? Maybe you post your pictures here, but what after that? Do you go back and revisit it or just move on and forget about it like me (mostly)? Do you enter competitions, or maybe send to magazines, do you send stuff to image banks, post it up on Flickr to attract attention and sales? maybe you print it out and hang a new picture in the toilet every month?

What do you do with yours?

Re: What Do You Do With Your Pictures?

Another good thread! I enter some competitions, basically when I remember...

I delete really dreadful stuff that I don't like - but keep most of it - and revisit it later on. I am always playing about in Photoshop - a lot of what I do doesn't get posted ehre because I never become happy with it...

Re: What Do You Do With Your Pictures?

I delete all RAW images and only keep the finished JPEGs unless it was a special event (A wedding or something else someone has paid me to do)

I delete all unused images, again, if an image is out of focus or overexposed, why keep it?

I have three external hard disks that I keep the identical data on, two here, a master and slave if you like, and a third that I keep at work in case I did have a house fire or soemthing.

As for my images, I keep them all on a website, and I regularly look through them, and this allows me to share my photos with some of my other photographer friends

I do print occasional ones too and have them around the house. I have only really been in to photography since about 2002, but all of my images that I have kept only takes up around 200GB of space, although now I have started using the 5D that is starting to creep up.

Like I said, unless it was something special, or something I was paid to do, then I don't always keep the RAW files, but I do keep the JPEGs in a large-ish size (6000x4500 approx) so they have plenty of resolution. If I want to keep the layers then I will keep them in Tiff format.

For the really big images, like panoramas, JPEG is also fine, if you have an image 30,000 pixels wide, resolution isn't an issue

Re: What Do You Do With Your Pictures?

Ohh....I used to be brutal with deleting things that were not the best and I do still go through pahses of that.

However - I recently purchased a 500GB hard drive....so I am a bit less of a perfectionist at the moment!!

I print out some images - and will occassionlally go through and looka t them (once every few months - mainly for little trips back or to recall something that happened )

Re: What Do You Do With Your Pictures?

I've got about 500GB of images and I keep meaning to go through them all and delete some.

I tend to upload stuff from the camera, delete the obvious rubbish straight away then go on to have a closer look to see which ones are good and which ones are also rans. It's the also rans I need to get cleared away.

To answer your question - In terms of what I do with them:

Family snaps I tend to get a big batch of 7x5 printed through photobox or similar now and again as I hate the thought of one day not having pictures kicking about the place for my kids to find when they're older.

My 'photography' shots - I've a handfull printed at A4 but really need to get more done and put in a wee folder. I'm paranoid that one day something will go pop and I'll be left with nothing although they are hosted in full size at various places.

A lot of the ones I'm happy with end up on here and some are for sale through stock photography although I've not really pushed that side as much as I should.

I've never entered any competitions and I've never sent an image to a magazine.

I have had the odd image used in print and on the interweb.

Oh and I've had the odd one used without my permission too.

Re: What Do You Do With Your Pictures?

I’m fairly new to the hobby, but I delete anything that I don’t like (most of it at the moment – storage is not too much of an issue!) Many of the photos I keep are used to promote my business (website, newsletters, magazine articles and ads etc). Anything to be used for print I save as a TIFF file, anything I like and want to keep for myself is saved as a large .Jpeg file. The ones I really like and may want to rework once I am better at it, I keep as a RAW file. RAW, TIFF and Jpeg files are saved on external hard drive and regularly backed up to DVD.

Re: What Do You Do With Your Pictures?

I delete nothing - I save and catalogue all originals to a external disk.

I've had many images published in newspapers, magazines, websites and for military journals (and other outlets).

I print very few. It's something I'm looking at doing.

Re: What Do You Do With Your Pictures?

I tend to return to the same scenics in the case of my landscapes so I keep the best two or three of each location and delete the rest. In the case of flowers I do basically the same. I have my favorites & they stay. The rest get trashed. My gallery gets better all the time as I learn & improve.

That's what I'm trying Bob. I've got my favourite locations and no matter what I've done in the past I can't help going back to try and better myself.

Re: What Do You Do With Your Pictures?

Storage is cheap. I delete nothing.

I shoot raw and keep every image I take. 4 x 1Tb external hard drives house every raw file I have taken since I converted to digital. 2 of the hard drives contain the original raw files and the other 2 HD's contain copies of the raws with the sidecar files.
