2nd attempt at close up. This time in B&W

This is my 2nd try at a close up in B&W, they still turn blurry quite alot but playing around with different settings has helped. This is of Star the Lab paw.

Much better!

Try widening your aperture by about 2 stops. As i get the impression your DOF is to shallow and thats why you have the blur.

This is another try, seems better to me. What do you think?

Would you say photography for beginers like myself is alot of trial and error?

Loads better! It looks Fab Stormey!

Yes photography for ALL levels is about trial and error. The more youe play about with the setting and experiment, the more and quicker you will learn.
