This is a consideration that I made right in the early days of buying cameras.

The first two or three lenses that bought for my first dSLR (Canon 300D) were the El-cheapo 18-55, don't care what anyone says it is a fantastic lens for it's price. The 75-300 (which adequately proves the get what you pay for statement quite nicely) and then the 50mm F1.8.

I was watching my friend take lots of 35mm shots, and realised that surely dSLRs would go that way eventually, so I only bought L series lenses for them, as they are great quality and work on both FF and Crop bodies. I am glad I did that. But now I have around £4000 worth of lenses, I am well and truly tied to Canon, as I would not (and probably could not) replace those lenses with a competitors equivalent without it taking a number of years.

I have never tested my lenses or body with baby pee either

Glad your kit is okay Suzi, hopefully you got some good images from the day also
