Light Painting

Light painting is something I've fancied trying out for some time now, and I've been working on all manner of things from LED to CF tubes for a good light source.

As I work in IT and also spent some 30 years as an electronics engineer I thought I would try and build something, this has led me to pulling apart a faulty flat panel LCD monitor to use the panels back lighting as a possible light source.

The beauty of using one of these panels is that the light source is very close to a daylight temperature and very diffused. Once the LCD part of the panel is removed, the panel light level is a lot brighter too.

I'm only at the assembly stage of this project at the moment, having chosen a big panel (19") and removed all none required parts. I've tested that it works and that I can override some of the original control signals.

While doing some testing with the panel it has dawned on me that this could also make a great light source for table-top photography and even possibly portraits too as the light is so soft, but the big plus is it's continuous.

Anyway I'll keep you posted on progress with this project as to whether it's a resounding successes or not

Hi Azz,

No this is sizeable flat panel of diffused light, much like a soft-box but only a lot thinner.

Thanks Paul, I've got some way to go, as I need to make up a case and means of mounting it to a light stand by adjustable bracket.

OK here is a quick test to show you what I'm talking about. I believe it's running at about minimum brightness at the moment, until I fit a preset to adjust the voltage to the control/driver chips control pin.
