Stunning DJ.

Good to see the ISO too. I take it these are with the 400mm but which body ?

I think the Blue Tit (7) is my favourite and the Starling (1) but they're all great.

Re: Starling,Long tailed tit, Fieldfare,Goldfinch,Great tit,Chaffinch,Blackbird

2000 ISO on the 50d is the maximum I'd want to use, and even then the image taken has to be in good light and properly exposed and have the subject fill the frame too. Heavy cropping will also show a lot of noise if the ISO (on 50d) is set high.

The light was constantly changing today (mostly cloudy with snow) so I decided just to use the 5dMKII. The auto ISO on this camera was mostly going to 3200 and so I had to sacrifice shutter speed to have it remain at 3200 and below. I would be quite happy to use ISO 4000 (which I have) as the images appear quite clean (in good light/exposure)
I even have a few images beyond ISO 4000 which I think are impressive too.

......and here's me giving you all the praise lol

I may have to raid my penny jar one day soon.

PS

Are you finding you can use faster shutter speeds with all this bright snow ?

Re: Starling,Long tailed tit, Fieldfare,Goldfinch,Great tit,Chaffinch,Blackbird

Don't get me wrong, I love my 50d and have quite a few images taken from it that are IMO of such high quality the 5d could not match, and I'm talking about the IQ paired with my 400mm, there is something in these images that my 5dmkII cannot match. Of course, these images have been taken at a low ISO and in good light.

The 50d has the speed as well

Re: Starling,Long tailed tit, Fieldfare,Goldfinch,Great tit,Chaffinch,Blackbird

Can't see the 50d being on the 'possible upgrade' list DJ as money is tight so an upgrade from ny 40D really needs to be a worthwhile and significant upgrade for me.

If I went for a 5D II - I would probably keep my 40D as re-sale wouldn't add too much to the funds.

Quite like the 7D on paper but like many - I'm waiting for the dust to settle on a few reported issues.

And just to throw a spanner in the works - I've been so close to taking the plunge into Canon L glass but haven't as that would mean making a final 'brand' decision lol so I'm also contemplating Nikon - D700 in which case the 40D would probably go.

Either way - Unless I have a moment of madness before then - It will June/July next year (when my bonus arrives) before I do anything so perhaps things will have changed by then.
