Help! I think my lens is broken

My 50mm is making a quiet whirring noise but not moving at all to focus.

Is there anything I can do or try or is it buggered?

Re: Help! I think my lens is broken

depending on cost there are 4 choices a, find cost of repair - b, chuck it and buy another,- c try and claim off insurance, -d if under warrantee get a replacement.

Alternatively come over to the light (Nikon)

Re: Help! I think my lens is broken

Could it be the connectors are dirty, where it screws into your camera. Have you tried wiping them with a lens cloth? Will it focus on Manual focus?

Re: Help! I think my lens is broken

I can change the focus manually though sure if I'm managing to lock focus - I'm hopeless at manual focusing.
Its only 7 months old would it still be under guarentee? Or would I contact? Shop or canon?

Well, it should be under a years warranty I would of thought. If it is that new, I would first try the shop where you bought it, and they should sort it out for you.

I thought dirty contacts, as I've read on other sites peoples AF packing in,and the lens not focusing, and it's been a problem with the connectors/contacts.

Either way, I'd take it back, and get it checked out.

Re: Help! I think my lens is broken

Online shop now responding and are adamant that I must send it back to them so that they can send it on to their distributors to sort out.
I fear this is going to be a lengthy affair.

In the meantime I must resist that Sigma 30mm 1.4mm thats singing to me on E Bay!

Re: Help! I think my lens is broken

I'd send it to Canon direct, might be quicker
