Does work block your creativity?

I think work gets in the way of my creative thinking! I know it gets in the way of actually being able to get on with doing photography, but i find i often don't have time to think and plan what i would like to do either! My head is often planning what to do tomorrow, next week, trying to remember lots of small snippets I get fed during the day, and then you get home and remember you forgot to phone someone back etc. Not easy to just snap out of that and think photography..

Work does of course pay the bills and pays for the kit and being a bloke there isn't much chance of me meeting (or wanting to meet) a rich sugar daddy or a wealthy husband! I do however keep looking for a rich widow... So for now at least it looks like my creative thinking, my time to play and experiment spontaniously when i do get the occasional idea is supressed. By the time I get home i have forgotten, I am too comfy to move, or soon it will be dark... Note to self: need to keep buying the lottery tickets!

Re: Does work block your creativity?

There are plenty of rich widows out there - you just haven't met any

But yeah, work/life can get in the way of hobbies. We should be working towards earlier not later retirements..

Re: Does work block your creativity?

I wish work was a problem! Lack of it is my problem... I hate not having work, and I do think photography suffers then too, from lethargy, and not wanting to spend 'quality time' photographing if you get me? I probably don't make much sense - but when one lacks ambition from being ground down out of work, it follows through to hobbies sadly.

Happy medium needed!

Re: Does work block your creativity?

mmmmmmmmmmmm tricky one, when I was photographing weddings yes it did towards the end, I was bored and I wanted to photograph other things.

Now I have my hobby back I am looking at things in a new light and seeing things I did'nt see before even though they were there cause all I thought about was brides and flowers lol.

I carry a tiny note book [in my handbag, could be tricky for you BC CARRYING A HANDBAG HA HA] that if I think of something or see something I would like to go back and photograph, I write it down. I sometimes don't get back that week lol but do eventually return.

Other things can get in the way too family kids etc.............

Stick with it though cause you know you love it......

Re: Does work block your creativity?

Hmm not sure, I think it might be how an individual brain's work, and how they see the world. Everyone is different.

I have to be creative, or I go nuts, seriously, ask my family same goes for work, I've always worked in creative work. Something catches my eye daily, it's how I see the world, I suppose. I guess you have to sometimes make time to do your thing too, especially when you are juggling work, family, kids and a million and one other things at the same time. But, I'm female so we can multi task better

I'm the same.

I have to work (don't we all) but I do feel my creative side is trapped.

It may sound strange but whilst I love photography it doesn't really fulfill my creative side.

To be creative I really need to switch off and cut loose - playing guitar, music, painting (I'm an illustrator you know) is where I release creativity.

Unwinding (rather than creativity) is what photography gives me especially getting off to the hills as that takes me away from everything - even work or the frustration of not managing to be creative..
